Tourism in combination with innovative systems brings energy savings

In Grand Hotel Bernardin in Slovenian city Portorož an innovative system for heating and cooling with sea water was installed

It reduced expanses for more than 30 %. Approximately 130 meters off shore and at a depth of 30 meters pumps gather sea water with the temperature between 15 and 22 °C. Pumps capacity is between 20.000 and 200.000 liters per hour. On-site pumping station the water is mechanically filtered. Throughout the process no chemical substances are used. Pumps that are being used are highly energy efficient and made out of materials suitable for salty environment. The system exploits advantageous energy potential of the sea and with the help of two reversible heat pumps, the hotel is heated in winter and cooled in the summer. This system is environmentally friendly project. The complex is no longer heated with heating oil, so the yearly emissions of CO2 are reduced for about 500 tonnes. Heat pumps ensure equal comfort for hotel users. The process doesn't use any chemicals or other additives, the sea water is returned to the sea in the same condition as it was pumped, only it has a few more or less degrees. Renovation of the marine capture and release was specially attended, some of existing underwater objects were transformed into artificial reefs. The project was carried out with the conclusion of energy contracting with the company GCE, which built this system at its own expense. Till now the hotel was paying its heating costs to the company. When the hotel was using oil for heating, the annual costs were between 300.000 and 330.000 €, now they are around 200.000 €. This means 100.000 € of yearly savings for the hotel Bernardin and all this without investing a cent. Nearby Municipality of Piran is also thinking about installing a similar pump in their theater Tartini.

Only 15 kilometers away, hotel Žusterna installed the first European solar co-generation system on their roof in 2012. Twelve modules installed by American company Cogenra will yearly produce 6.769 kW of electricity and in average 4.147 liters of warm water. Hotel will therefore annually save 4.300 € previously given for heating oil and also make a profit of approximately 1.700 € per year by selling surplus electricity. They plan that their 35.000 € worth investment will be refunded in five to seven years. Solar co-generation system installed on the roof captures and changes up to 80 % of solar energy into electricity and warm water. “Modules SunDeck manufactured by Cogenra vary from regular modules in their parabolic form that ten times identifies sunlight and reflex it into to the receiver with silicon cells. Because of their sensitivity to high temperatures a cooling system is used to maintain an optimum operating temperature and this conducted heat is therefore used for heating,” explained Aleš Tekavec, the director of the company BringSol that supplied and installed above mentioned modules.

Tourism therefore is not only the sector that earns money with number of visitors and interesting offers, but is a good place to invest in various technological innovations. Those not only bring profits whit their savings but also minimize negative impacts on the environment.
